Product Description:
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer derived from the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. It is produced as a white to cream-colored granular or powdered material with excellent film-forming, adhesive, and emulsifying properties. PVA is characterized by high tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to oils, greases, and solvents. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible, complying with international standards such as ISO, FDA (for specific grades), and REACH. Available in varying degrees of hydrolysis (87-99%) and molecular weights, PVA offers customizable viscosity, solubility, and thermal stability for diverse industrial applications. It dissolves readily in hot or cold water, forming clear, viscous solutions, and is compatible with plasticizers, fillers, and other polymers.
Function:
1. Binder & Adhesive: Provides strong adhesion to porous surfaces like paper, textiles, and wood.
2. Film Former: Creates flexible, oxygen- and aroma-resistant films for coatings and packaging.
3. Thickening Agent: Enhances viscosity in aqueous solutions for paints, adhesives, and cosmetics.
4. Emulsifier & Stabilizer: Stabilizes emulsions in polymerization processes (e.g., PVC production).
5. Barrier Material: Acts as a water-soluble barrier in dissolvable laundry/dishwasher pods.
6. Fiber Reinforcement: Improves strength and durability in textile sizing and non-woven fabrics.
7. Biomedical Carrier: Serves as a matrix for drug delivery systems, wound dressings, and contact lenses.
Applications:
1. Textile & Paper Industry:
a. Sizing agent for yarns to reduce breakage during weaving.
b. Surface coating for paper to enhance printability and water resistance.
2. Construction & Paints:
a. Additive in cement mortars and gypsum products to improve workability.
b. Water-based paints and coatings for walls, wood, and metal.
3. Packaging:
a. Water-soluble films for unit-dose detergent packets and agrochemicals.
b. Biodegradable food packaging materials.
4. Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare:
a. Binder in tablet formulations.
b. Hydrogel dressings for wound care.
c. Ophthalmic lubricants and artificial tear solutions.
5. Adhesives:
Wood glue, bookbinding adhesives, and remoistenable labels.
6. 3D Printing:
Support material in water-soluble filaments for complex prints.
7. Agriculture:
Seed coating to improve germination and nutrient delivery.
Encapsulation matrix for controlled-release fertilizers/pesticides.
8. Consumer Goods:
Slime toys, dissolvable embroidery stabilizers, and cosmetic peel-off masks.
9. Electronics:
Temporary protective films for circuit boards during manufacturing.
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is a versatile, eco-friendly polymer bridging performance and sustainability. Its adaptability across industries-from high-tech manufacturing to everyday consumer products-makes it indispensable for innovations in green chemistry, advanced materials, and functional solutions. With its unique balance of strength, solubility, and safety, PVA continues to drive advancements in circular economy practices and resource-efficient technologies.
